Introduction

Technology empowers the way we think, learn and work, and it has become imperative in the workplace. It is also an important skill and knowledge required by many in multidisciplinary industries. In order to meet the challenges and demands of the IT industry, the School of Information and Communication Technology (SICT) addresses Politeknik Brunei’s Vision in producing skilled and marketable graduates through quality education and exposure to the Brunei ICT industry.

The SICT was first established in January 2012, offering three Advanced Diploma programmes in Computer Network, Information Systems and Technology, and Web Computing with an enrolment of 139 students. Later on, SICT introduced two new diploma programme called Information Science and Digital Media. At present, SICT is led by a Head of School, Assistant Head of School and is supported by 20 lecturers.

SICT continuously reviews its curriculum to complement the Brunei ICT Industry Competency Framework [BIICF] under the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI). Also, SICT is looking into the prospects of integrating industry professional certification into its existing curriculum.

Among others, the School of ICT has been entrusted to manage the institution’s Learning Management System (LMS) activities as part of the Politeknik Brunei Five Year Development Plan (2015—2020). In support of this, SICT aims to introduce a new ‘E-Learning Unit’ to focus on LMS and e-learning initiatives for Politeknik Brunei, in the near future.

The school is also responsible for coordinating several IT projects, namely the “Partners in Learning” initiatives based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Politeknik Brunei and Microsoft Brunei, and the Politeknik Brunei IT Academy.
